ADD/ADHD

The difference between ADD and ADHD is the type. There are three types, Inattentive Type (ADD), Hyperactive Type (ADHD) and Combined Type. Attention deficit impacts the frontal lobe of the brain, the centre responsible for higher-order thinking, organization, prioritization and time-management. When we are lacking dopamine in that part of the brain, it becomes more difficult to complete tasks that are highly valued in our society, making us feel "unproductive". Many different factors affect our brain's ability to produce dopamine and having an understanding about how we produce it can have an impact on how we manage life with it. Additionally, it presents differently in based on gender which tends to have a lot to do with how we have been socialized. Many of the studies that formulated our original assessments and diagnostic criteria were created using male populations therefore it can be more difficult for women and other genders to seek a diagnosis. Even when you don't have an official diagnosis, it can be useful to your functioning and coping to understand how dopamine impacts your motivation, and your lifestyle. This knowledge can help you feel more in control of your life again.
